  • 2014 Artezin Zinfandel ~ Mendocino County, California

The very first thing you notice about this vintage is the deep, darkvermillion red cast of the wine, tinged with indigo blue hues. The aroma is classic, dominated by cherry, pomegranate and boysenberry. As expected, there’s a fine layer of white and black pepper. Flavors are abundant and very 'zinny’ led by raspberry surrounded in a spicy sea of cloves, cinnamon and allspice. As you taste the wine you’ll experience a plush, full, well-rounded mouthfeel that is coated with fine grained tannins and a lingering, memorable finish. I make this wine for immediate enjoyment, but the acid backbone and well balanced structure will allow for aging for at least another four years, perhaps longer.

  • 2011 Neyers, Vista Luna Borden Ranch ~ St. Helena, California

This Zinfandel reminds me of the wine I was introduced to in my early days in California, after I moved to San Francisco in 1970. Zinfandel was then all the rage

deservedly so as it wasfruity, quaffable and complex enough to attract your attention. As stronger and  more disease tolerant versions of the variety were developed, though, the size of the clusters grew, higher sugar levels were necessary for maturity, and the alcohol level increased in the finished wines. On the Bokisch Ranch, in the Sierra foothills region known as Borden Ranch, the old vine plant material and the hard quartz soil result in small clusters, normal ripening and fruit flavors that are reminiscent of what my kids affectionately refer to as my 'olden days'
